Telfer calls for Safer Speed into Port Lincoln

Flinders State Liberal MP Sam Telfer has joined businesses and users of Western Approach Road in calling on the state government to add measures to ensure better safety, including a lowered speed limit of 80 km/hr.

Mr Telfer said Western Approach Road has seen significant growth over a number of years with much of the industrial area along the road now used by heavy vehicles.

“The current speed limit of 110 km/hr, with this type of industry use, is leading to dangerous scenarios,” Mr Telfer said.

“The previous Liberal government provided significant funding for more overtaking lanes, but we still have slow moving, heavy vehicles interacting with fast moving, domestic vehicles, as well as vehicles entering the highway through multiple intersections.”

Western Approach Road intersects with many roads, including New West Rd, Dodd Rd, and Pine Freezers Rd, as well as various business entrances, in areas with a 110 km/hr speed limit.

“With more grain trucks, industry, and other freight movement in this area interacting with smaller vehicles, there’s a serious accident waiting to happen,” Mr Telfer said.

“This seems like common sense, and I am working with local motorists and businesses to resolve this problem.”

Mr Telfer has written to Transport Minister Tom Koutsantonis, bringing this speed limit issue to his attention, and is encouraging other locals who share this view to also contact the Minister. Mr Telfer is urging constituents to contact the Flinders Electorate Office should they require assistance in writing to the Minister.
